Indianapolis, Ind. (27 May 2022) – As Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) prepares to defend its 2021 Indianapolis 500 victory, the team is excited to announce a new partnership with Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. that will kick off with the 106th Running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 29th.
Cleveland-Cliffs is the largest flat-rolled steel company and the largest supplier of steel to the automotive industry in North America, and is ranked 171 on the 2022 Fortune 500 List. Cleveland-Cliffs is vertically integrated with the unique advantage of being self-sufficient, beginning with the extraction of raw materials through the manufacturing of steel products, tubular components and stamping and tooling.
The 2022 edition of the Memorial Day Weekend race marks the sixth appearance for MSR in the Indianapolis 500 as the Ohio-based team enters the race with two drivers that have winning experience in the huge event.
Helio Castroneves will be looking to make history and earn a fifth Indianapolis 500 victory onboard the No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda, having won his fourth Indianapolis 500 last year with Meyer Shank Racing. Simon Pagenaud will pilot the No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda as he aims to score a second Indianapolis 500 win after claiming victory from the pole position in 2019.
With Cleveland-Cliffs valuing precision, technological advances and making the complicated look easy in the hands of skilled professionals, the company has teamed with MSR to build consumer awareness through motorsports.
Recognized as the largest flat-rolled steel company in North America, Cleveland-Cliffs represents 26,000 employees across the Great Lakes Region. The company is committed to being a good environmental steward and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 25% by 2030 to remain North America’s leader in sustainable mining and steelmaking. Approximately 9,000 Cleveland-Cliffs employees are based in Indiana, making the Indianapolis 500 an ideal platform to launch the MSR-Cliffs partnership.
“As our program has grown, the interest from companies that want to partner with us has been significant so we are thrilled to partner with another company that is also based in the Midwest,” said team co-owner Mike Shank. “They are a really impressive group, and their ambition is to continue to grow. We are excited to be a part of their plan to expand the awareness of the Cleveland-Cliffs name and everything that the company is capable of.”
Meyer Shank Racing and Cleveland-Cliffs will have one final practice day ahead of the Memorial Day event on Sunday May 29th. The 106th Running of the Indianapolis 500 will air live on NBC starting at 11:00am ET. Live radio coverage will also be provided on SiriusXM Ch. 160.
